Guangzhou High School Students Study at the University of Washington (FIUTS Program) in July 2014

This summer twenty five students from Xiguan Foreign Language School in Guangzhou, China visited Seattle from July 14th through July 28th. They were accompanied by an English teacher and a history teacher from their school along with their guide Eva and her husband from Sports United. A wonderful time was had by all!

Xiguan Foreign Language School is a school that has welcomed our WCE students in Guangzhou many times! Throughout the WCE web site are many photos of the wonderful school visits and activities our students have been invited to participate in at their school with their students. There are also many photos of the day on our WCE tours where we are joined by Chinese students who hop on the bus with us so that we can tour together and shop together at a night market in Guangzhou. Not all the students in these photos are from Xiguan Foreign Language school, but many are.

This was the fourth summer that WCE has co-hosted a delegation from Guangzhou, China with the FIUTS program at the University of Washington. FIUTS stands for the Foundation for International Understanding Through Students. During the school year, FIUTS provides many programs and activities for the international students on the UW campus. In the summer, they offer a couple different camps for inbound international student groups.

During their tour here, students spent mornings in the English classes with teachers secured by FIUTS and afternoons touring Seattle. Tours included a campus tour of the University of Washington; a ferry ride to explore Bainbridge Island; a downtown Seattle tour; a visit to Woodland Park Zoo and a barbeque at lower Woodland Park; a visit to the Ballard Locks; the Microsoft Visitors center and the Bellevue Square Shopping Center; a Pike Place Market tour and Scavenger Hunt; the EMP, Space Needle, and Seattle Center; a Boeing Factory Tour along with shopping at the Seattle Premium Outlet store; and the University Village Shopping Center.

Their stay in Seattle included two weekends. One weekend was spent camping at Mount Rainier at Camp Arnold and the other was spent with homestay families. A number of families who have had students travel to China with WCE participated in homestaying students from Xiguan Foreign Language School this summer. Students always tell us that the homestay weekend is the highlight of their trip!

On the groups last evening in Seattle, a Farewell Dinner was planned on the UW campus. All of the participating homestay families were invited to attend. Before heading back to Guanghzhou, the group flew to Los Angelas for two final days of touring.

On Friday they had their first English class and a placement test. (The group was divided into two classes based on English ability.) Then they were off to visit the Seattle waterfront, the Aquarium, and to have dinner at the Hard Rock Café. Saturday the group was off to Mount Rainier for a camping trip at Camp Arnold. For many this was their first camping trip and their first chance to touch snow!

The following week mornings were spent in English classes. Classes were designed to include lessons that would be helpful with the different afternoon activities for the group. Monday, afternoon July 15th the group visited the Space Needle, the EMP, and the Seattle Center where they had dinner. Tuesday, the group visited the Microsoft Visitor Center, Bellevue Square, and had dinner at California Pizza Kitchen. Wednesday, the group visited the Boeing Everett plant for a tour and went shopping at Seattle Premium Outlet Stores. Thursday, the group took a ferry, had ice cream, and explored Bainbridge Island. Friday, the group traveled to Green Lake where the group went boating. Then they returned to campus to be picked up by host families at 5:00 P.M. Saturday and Sunday were Host Family Days.

Monday, July 22nd the students were returned to campus by 8:00 AM. by their homestay families. The students and teachers all had a wonderful time on their homestay weekend! English classes resumed for everyone. In the afternoon the group visited Chinatown and then went to a Seattle Mariners Baseball Game. Tuesday, the group visited the Woodland Park Zoo accompanied by a group of High School volunteers arranged by FIUTS. Wednesday, the group spent their last day of class making Thank-you cards for their host families. Then they were off to Northgate Mall for some last minute shopping. All of the host families were invited to a Farewell Buffet Dinner in the Walker Ames Room in Kane Hall at the UW at 7:00 PM. Students received a graduation certificate and group photo. A lovely evening was enjoyed by all! Students from Xiguan Foreign Language School performed for everyone with card tricks and songs!
